About the Platteville Municipal Auditorium

Municipal Auditorium in Platteville, WI. 2011 Celeste Moore for 'Friends of Platteville Municipal Auditorium'History
From the beginning, the auditorium at Platteville's Municipal Building was an important part of the city. The Art Deco theatre was included in the original building when City Hall was constructed in the 1928. It was the site of visiting Vaudeville acts, dance recitals, minstrel shows, staged community events, city band concerts, high school plays and graduation ceremonies. Community theatre groups operated in the 40s and 50s, gradually dying out in the 60s. A few children's plays were presented in the 1960s.

The current group, Platteville Community Theatre (or PCT), began in 1980. Robert Schlicher, who had moved to Platteville from Beaver Dam, suggested that Platteville develop a similar community theatre group to utilize the stage at the Platteville Municipal Building with its historical ties to the city. The company originally started as a group of ten.

Over the course of time the PCT performed comedies, tragedies and farces, have experimented with original compositions, children's shows, free summer skits, musicals, readers' theater, ballets, play competitions and dinner theaters.  Platteville Community Theatre was invited to join forces with the UW‑P Pioneer Players twice at the university.

Platteville Municipal Auditorium was chosen as the venue for the 2003 Wisconsin Association of Community Theatre (WACT) Competition, hosted by the Platteville Community Theatre.  Wisconsin Association of Community Theatre is a not-for-profit group dedicated to enhancing and encouraging the theatre arts in Wisconsin. WACT sponsors the beginning level of competition for amateur theatre groups through the American Association of Community Theatre (AACT) program known as AACT/Fest.  A record number of ten plays were presented during the festival.

Other entities who have used the Municipal Auditorium are home schoolers, churches, Grant County Historical Society, Ken Kilian's Classic Big Band, Oasis, D.A.R.E. graduation events, Southwest Academy of Ballet Arts, Saint Mary's School, Cuba City schools, Greater Midwestern Theatre Company performances, nationally known bluegrass bands, Off-Broadway dramas and musicals, Platteville Rotary Club, Platteville Public Library, Wisconsin Poet Laureate, ArtsBuild, Platteville Chamber of Commerce, Catholic Knights insurance society, and various political and civic assemblies,
